An Asbestos Refurbishment & Demolition (R&D) Survey is an intrusive investigation undertaken before refurbishment, alteration, soft-strip or demolition works.

Unlike an Asbestos Management Survey, which supports ongoing building occupation and maintenance, an R&D Survey is designed to locate asbestos-containing materials within affected work areas that could be disturbed during construction activities.

The survey provides project teams with essential asbestos information to support safe planning, contractor management and CDM 2015 Pre-Construction Information requirements.

What is the difference between a Management Survey and an R&D Survey?

A Management Survey supports normal building occupation and maintenance by identifying accessible ACMs. An R&D Survey is intrusive and investigates areas affected by planned refurbishment, alteration or demolition works.

Can an existing Asbestos Management Survey be used instead?

No. A Management Survey is not a substitute for an R&D Survey because the inspection methods and purpose are different.

Does an R&D Survey include asbestos removal?

No. The survey identifies asbestos risks and provides information required for safe planning. Removal works are separately arranged where required.

Can an R&D Survey be completed in an occupied building?
